Building the Future of Belfast Athletics

Investing in Students. Strengthening Community. Building for the Future.

The BAHS Track & Field Improvement Project will modernize our athletic complex and create safe, high-quality facilities for student-athletes, physical education programs, and the broader community.

The Story

Sixty years of making do. That ends now.

The athletic facility at Belfast Area High School was built in 1963. Today, the track has an 18-inch drop from the surface to the field below. Grass grows through cracked asphalt. Frost heaves have buckled the surface. The bleachers and lights date to the same era.

Belfast has one of Maine's premier outdoor track and field programs — and hasn't been able to host a home meet since 2023. Liability concerns make it impossible. Soccer, football, and field hockey are affected too.

"We can and need to do better for our student-athletes. We should, at the very least, provide a safe environment for them."

— Susan Robbins, Athletic Director, Belfast Area High School

In Fall 2025, voters rejected a $3.5 million bond by roughly 700 votes — not because the community doesn't care, but because trust needed to be rebuilt and questions about turf materials needed to be answered. Athletic Director Susan Robbins didn't wait for a new vote. She personally raised $300,000 to fund design and permitting through Activitas Inc., keeping the project alive. A professional fundraiser is now on board. A community advisory committee is forming. All permits have been submitted to the Maine DEP. The path is clear. All we need is the funding.
